Top SA musicians to sing for Mambazo

The Grammy-awards winning scathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will be honoured tomorrow through a concert that features the country's best musicians.

The Grammy-awards winning scathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will be honoured tomorrow through a concert that features the country's best musicians.

Known as Halala Mambazo Amnyama, the concert is billed for Carnival City in Brakpan.

Other groups to perform include Lucky Dube's band and the famed crossover group Freshlyground.

Mambazo, as the group is affectionately known, will be honoured for their invaluable contribution to South Africa as cultural ambassadors.

The group has made the country proud by scooping the Grammy awards, proving that African traditional music makes an impact internationally.

Mambazo won the first Grammy with their debut album Shaka Zulu in the US in 1987 for Best Traditional Folk Recording.

In 2005, the group got its second Grammy award for Raise Your Spirit Higher, which was awarded the Best Traditional World Music Recording.

The group has been nominated 11 times for a Grammy Award. Last year, the group won the South African Music Award for the Best Scathamiya Album. for its album Ilembe. Early this year, they scooped another Grammy award.

In a career spanning more than three decades, the group has taken African traditional music to its greatest heights.

The new Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana will grace the occasion. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available at Computicket.
