Indigent family ecstatic after being given a new house

THE IMPOVERISHED Zwane family of Inkande village near Inquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal wept tears of joy when they were given keys to a brand-new, fully furnished house yesterday.

The 15-member family will be moving from a one-bedroomed mud house they had been living in. Bheki Zwane, 54, and his wife Soliphi, 57, have five children of their own, but are also the guardians of their eight orphaned grandchildren.

Their plight came to the attention of social development MEC Meshack Radebe when he visited the area last month. Radebe asked businessman Philani Mavundla to build a house for them.

Sholiphi cried uncontrollably when she was handed the keys to the five-bedroomed house.

"It's like moving from hell to heaven. This is like a dream. My grandchildren were also given school uniforms. I and my husband will now sleep on a bed - in our own room."

Radebe said: "What is important for us is to bring back dignity to our people. I was saddened when I saw their mud house in March."
