THE impoverished Zwane family of Inkande village near Inquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal wept tears of joy when they were given the keys to a brand-new, fully furnished house yesterday.
The 15-member family will be moving from a one-bedroomed mud house in which they had been crammed.
Bheki Zwane, 54, and his wife Sholiphi, 57, live with five of their own children and are also the guardians of eight of their orphaned grandchildren. The children were allegedly teased at school because they did not have proper uniforms and lived in a shabby homestead.
Their plight came to the attention of social development MEC Meshack Radebe when he visited the area last month. Radebe then asked local businessman Philani Mavundla to build a house for them. Sholiphi cried tears of joy when she was handed the keys to her new house.
"This is like a dream. My grandchildren were also given school uniforms. I will now sleep on a bed with a mattress with my husband. We will also have our own room," she said.
Education MEC Senzo Mchunu, who accompanied Radebe, said he was happy with help the Zwane children received.
