A WOMAN has been detained for trafficking 10 children from rural Mozambique to Maputo, police said.

Lurdes Mabunda, head of child protection and domestic violence in the national police service, said on Tuesday night that the woman was allegedly trafficking the children from Inhambane, 800km north of Maputo, when she was arrested last week.

Mabunda was speaking at a Southern African Development Community regional meeting on human trafficking in Maputo.

The meeting sought to set a common strategy to combat child trafficking in 14 nations.

Mabunda said the woman had alleged that she recruited the children in southern Gaza.

She told police she wanted to organise "logistics" for their employment.

Mozambique and Zambia are the only countries in the SADC region that have set up anti-trafficking legislation. - Sapa
