Time to rise to challenge

None of us can say that news that we are in a recession has come as a shock. Economists have been preparing us for a while for this sad news.

None of us can say that news that we are in a recession has come as a shock. Economists have been preparing us for a while for this sad news.

Even when they disagreed, it was more on the fine print as to what technically constitutes a recession.

It is no comfort to those whose jobs have been hanging by a thread to know that they might be part of the millions around the world that are suffering as a result of a combination of corporate greed and scant regulation in markets crying out for same.

Even when we were technically not in a recession, things were looking bleak.

The first three months of the year saw around 300000 jobs lost. Sad to say, things are set to get worse before they get any better.

But there is no use throwing our hands up in despair. In the words of American president Barack Obama, we should not allow this crisis to go to waste.

For government, this is an opportunity to show leadership. Anyone can lead in boom times. Great leaders are defined by how they navigated the storms during their period of leadership.

In this season of industrial unrest, we hope that government, labour and business will rise up to the challenges of our time to put the interest of South Africa ahead of their respective narrow joys.

Unlike the last time we were in a recession, this country now belongs to all of us.

If we are to turn things around, we need to put everybody's shoulder to the wheel.
