Ramaala pulls out

Top runner Hendrick Ramaala has pulled out of the IAAF World Championships in Germany in August due to alleged empty promises from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Top runner Hendrick Ramaala has pulled out of the IAAF World Championships in Germany in August due to alleged empty promises from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

The experienced Ramaala, 37, was included in Athletics South Africa's team to the championships where he was to compete in the marathon.

He is angry that Sascoc top brass were reneging on their alleged promise to reimburse him and the other athletes for the money lost in the preparations for the Beijing Olympics.

He has sent a letter to ASA informing them that he was not going to Germany.

"The main reason for this is the bad experience I had as a member of the South African Olympic Team to Beijing last year," read the letter. "Promises of financial support were made to me and were not kept.

"I feel past promises have to be kept before I become part of the future [national] teams."

Molatelo Malehopo, ASA's general manager said Sascoc "met our athletes outside of the federation. We were not aware of the promises."
