With the latest news that 7de Laan actor Freedom Hadebe, pictured, is becoming a sangoma, the spotlight has now fallen on celebrity sangomas in the country.
Questions have been raised as to whether some of these celebrity sangomas really practise their calling or is it just a fashionable thing for celebrities to become sangomas.
Stage and TV's Babe Cele, who was initiated as a sangoma a few years ago, said she was not practising at the moment.
"When I was initiated I did it for my mother who was the one who was supposed to answer the calling, but could not so it because of old age," Cele explained.
Motsweding FM station manager Ben Dikobe, who is still in the process of initiation, says it will be up to the ancestors whether he practises or not.
"I got my calling in 2006 and at first, I will be frank with you, I resisted because of my Western culture orientation and Christian background" Dikobe said.
"But now I have embraced the calling wholeheartedly, and if it comes to a stage where I have to leave everything and practise, I will happily do so."
Kaya FM DJ Ken Nkwashu says: "All the signs that I will be a sangoma are there, based on my ability to predict events."
Other celebrities who have heeded the ancestors' call in recent years and have proudly gone public about it include musicians Camagwini, Latoya Makhene, veteran DJ Treasure Tshabalala, stage actress Busi Zokufa, Mthinzin.com actress Noninzi Williams, DJ and Metro FM programmes manager Segale Mogotsi and Afro pop musician Ntokozo Masinga.
