KWAZULU-NATAL police have noted a surge in "black dollar" scams despite frequent warnings.

Superintendent Jay Naicker said the fraudsters were becoming bolder. He said black dollar fraudsters approach their victimss and tell them they have black dollars that can be cleaned with a certain chemical.

"The con artists will always use different stories, but the underlying theme is that the black dollars can be cleaned with a special chemical that is known to the fraudsters only," Naicker said.

People conned

Naicker said the commercial crimes unit and banking authorities were also concerned about fraudsters intercepting invoices and then contacting the company purporting to be the supplier. They claim that the supplier has changed its banking details and convince the company to pay into the new account.
