Alliance bashes Mbeki

The ANC Youth League and Young Communist League continue to dance on Thabo Mbeki's political grave.

The leadership of both organisations have accused the former president of centralising power on himself and frustrating the tripartite alliance.

YCL secretary Bhuti Manamela and ANCYL president Julius Malema turned the YCL's 87th birthday celebration at Cosatu House in Braamfontein into a Mbeki- bashing ceremony.

Malema applauded President Jacob Zuma's decision to consult the SA Communist Party and Cosatu in deciding who to appoint to his cabinet. He said this was in sharp contrast with Mbeki, who centralised power on himself.

"Had you been critical of the regime you would never have been given a position of responsibility," Malema said.

The YCL's Manamela accused Mbeki of appointing SACP members as ministers without consulting the SACP.

"People like Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi were appointed without consultation. The watchdogs who were appointed ended up being the dogs that were being watched."

This comes in the middle of discussions in the ruling alliance about the state of the SACP leadership.
