Bafana Bafana's most capped player with 81 appearances yesterday confirmed to Sowetan that he was leaving Blackburn Rovers where he made 139 appearances.
He played his last match for Blackburn when he came on as a substitute in the 69th minute in their scoreless draw against the relegated West Bromwich Albion at Ewood Park on Sunday.
Sam Allardyce's side finished their disappointing season 15th on the log with 41 points.
Mokoena, who started his professional soccer career in South Africa where he played for Jomo Cosmos, has signed a three-season deal with Portsmouth.
"It is sad to leave Blackburn Rovers, but I'm proud of my contribution to the club. I've been a loyal servant of the club and one is leaving in peace," said Mokoena.
"The most important thing about the move to Portsmouth for me is that I'm going there to play. Age is no longer on my side and all that I want is to play regularly."
Mokoena said he was going to the Confederations Cup in high spirits after signing on the dotted line with Portsmouth, where Nigerian winger John Utaka will be his teammate.
"We have the Confederations Cup coming in June and 2010 World Cup, I also want to be part of the two historic tournaments as a player and help Bafana Bafana to fare well.
"I'm looking forward to contributing to the success of Portsmouth in the English Premiership."
Mokoena moved to Ewood Park in June 2005 from Belgian club Genk.
He has also played for other European giants like Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax Amsterdam as well as KFC Germinal Beerschot.
The 28-year-old defender, who is expected back home this week for Confederations Cup preparations, will also launch the Aaron Mokoena Foundation on May 28.
The launch in Sedibeng will be attended by an array of South African soccer stars and administrators.
Some of the overseas stars are also coming this week to support Mokoena, who will be joining them later this year when they launch their foundations.
