The SA multiple record-holder finished second in the long jump at an international track and field meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday.
He cleared 8,17m, his best this year, finishing behind Morocco's Yahyk Berrabah who produced a new national record jump of 8,38m.
Mokoena's second place finish earned him a place in the IAAF-VTB Bank World Athletics Final scheduled for Thessaloniki, Greece, in September.
Some of the top athletes who were in Morocco included Christine Ohuruogu, Pamela Jelimo, Wilfred Bungei and Gerd Kanter.
Mokoena has made it clear that he is targeting a gold medal in Germany and at the 2012 London Olympics.
He won silver in Beijing last year in the only highlight of South Africa's disastrous campaign.
Still in Rabat, South African record-holder Ruben Ramolefi finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 8min:22,06sec. Kenya's Paul Koech won the event in 8:07,80.
Another South African, Kagiso Kumbane, came seventh in the 200m in 21,49 secs.
In Italy, Willem Coertzen set a new South African record in the decathlon at the Multistars meeting at Desenzano de Garda.
He collected 7 907 points to achieve the B-standard for the IAAF World Championships to move him into seventh place on the 2009 international performance list.
Moving to the United States, Peter van der Westhuizen finished third at the Adidas Track Classic at Carson in a time of 3:38,29.
