ALL but one of KwaZulu-Natal's Safa regions have thrown their weight behind Irvin Khoza as their preferred candidate for the position of Safa president.
Ten of the 11 Safa regions invited Khoza to KwaZulu-Natal last weekend where they publicly announced that they will vote for him on September 27.
eThekwini region, which is led by Local Organising Committee Durban volunteer programme head for the 2010 World Cup Alpha Mchunu, did not attend the meeting.
Mazwi Mkhize, one of the top soccer bosses in KwaZulu-Natal, said they called Khoza to Durban to let him know where they stood regarding the position of president.
"Ten regions in KwaZulu-Natal took a resolution in their last meeting that Khoza is our preferred candidate for the presidency," Mkhize said. "We have the interest of our football at heart, so we felt it was just an insult and a smear campaign to say that some members have been bribed.
"With Khoza in charge as Safa president from September 27 when we have the elections, the federation will continue to grow in leaps and bounds.
"Prior to Khoza becoming PSL chairman, the league had all sorts of finance-related challenges and poor marketing. [Now] even Fifa has congratulated the PSL on various innovations."
Khoza said he appreciated the gesture from people who have approached him to stand for the position of Safa president.
The massive backing from KwaZulu-Natal came hardly a week after the Azanian People's Organisation announced their backing for him.
This was after a body known as the Football Transformation Forum was formed and immediately endorsed Danny Jordaan as their preferred candidate.
