A SOWETO man yesterday lashed out at the police who he accused of failing to take a statement from him following a car accident which landed him in hospital.
Samuel Manana was knocked down by a car driven by award-winning gospel singer Deborah Fraser, main picture, in the Johannesburg CBD, about two weeks ago.
Manana said he was lucky to be alive after he was hit by the vehicle at corner Troye and Commissioner streets.
The singer, he said, never even bothered to contact him after the accident.
He said Fraser's car, a 4X4, was travelling "at high speed and there was no way that it could have stopped".
"The first thing that came to mind when I saw the car was when and how it was going to stop.
"I saw it ramming into a red car that was waiting for the traffic light to turn green. Then I saw it come towards me."
He said he had to dive to the ground and was only hit on the legs.
"I cannot imagine what could have happened had I not dived," Manana said.
He said his feet were numb and he did not even see the driver of the car.
"A metro police officer asked me if I saw the person who had knocked me down. I told him I had not and that was when he said it was a celebrity.
"Fraser stayed in her car and did not even come to see me. It was only when the ambulance left the scene that she came out of her car," he said.
Manana's wife, Rephia, said: "I am angry at her. The least she could have done was to contact my husband to find out how he was doing. She does not have ubuntu.
"We do not want her to come because she is a celebrity. We want her to show ubuntu - that is what black people do in such cases."
Fraser said: "The police took my statement but I do not know how far they are with investigations. I am not going to answer anymore questions."
Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Inspector Edna Mamonyane said Manana should go to the city's central police station and check at the accident office.
"They will give him a case number to check how far are the investigations."
