FORMER soccer star Mandla Sithole handed himself in to the police yesterday following the murder of a 31-year-old man in Dobsonville, Soweto.

Sithole, who is presently Orlando Pirates Legends coach and coordinator, handed himself in at Protea police station and was accompanied by his lawyer.

"The man was stabbed in the chest at around 1pm on Sunday," Inspector Kay Makhubele said.

The man, Thulani Ndlovu, of Dobsonville Ext 3, died at Leratong Hospital in Kagiso on the West Rand on Sunday afternoon.

Sithole, a former Orlando Pirates striker, apparently drove Ndlovu to the hospital after he had allegedly stabbed him and left him there, not knowing that he would die moments later.

BORROWED MONEY

Makhubele said: "The dead man had allegedly borrowed R100 from Sithole because he did not have money for petrol.

"On Sunday, Sithole went to Ndlovu's house and demanded his money back. Ndlovu told him he did not have it and Sithole took Ndlovu's boosting cables and put them in his van.

"Ndlovu tried to reason with Sithole, who allegedly grabbed him by the neck and pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest."

Ndlovu's sister, Bhekizizwe Ndlovu. said Sithole dumped her brother at Leratong Hospital and lied that he was his uncle.

She said Sithole left the hospital saying he was going to buy a drink but never returned. Suspicious nurses took down his car's registration and called the police.

"We had gone to church and only heard about the incident when we came back. We went to the hospital and were told he had died," she said.

"We are shocked at the manner in which he died. He was quiet and humble.

"Thulani's girlfriend went to Mandla's house but was told that he had fled to KwaZulu-Natal."

Sithole's close friend, who did not want to be named, said Sithole had called him shortly after the incident and said he had just killed someone.

"He did not tell me that he had stabbed the man, saying only that he had kicked him. I only found out later that he had stabbed him.

"When I saw Sithole earlier he was angry. I warned the others not to argue with him. He is short-tempered but we (the other guys and I) admired him. He supplied us with soccer kits and encouraged us."

He said Sithole took Ndlovu to a doctor but they were referred to the hospital.

"He drove him to Tshepo Themba Private Hospital and they said he should pay R3000 deposit but he did not have the money.

"He then drove to Leratong Hospital where he dropped Ndlovu off at casualty, where he died moments later," said the man.
