LONDON - South Africa beat France 21-5 in the first cup quarterfinal of the IRB Sevens World Series at Twickenham yesterday and gained a further 12 points on the overall standings - just a single point away from clinching the IRB Series for the first time.

"It was probably our toughest match in this tournament," said Springbok coach Paul Treu afterwards. "The guys were quite tense, knowing what the win meant."

The Springboks were set to play New Zealand in the semifinal. The Kiwis beat Fiji 33-14 after a disappointing season but looked back to their best. A win over New Zealand would see South Africa win the series. - Sapa
