Safety at high-risk schools is under the spotlight in Limpopo.

Safety at high-risk schools is under the spotlight in Limpopo.

A community meeting was held at Khalavha village where a Grade 12 pupil was killed at Jack Lavhengwa school during a fight over a chair last week.

The deceased, Matodzi Ramunenyiwa, 20, was stabbed to death by a fellow pupil during the fight.

After the incident, parents called a meeting where they threatened to withdraw their children from the school if security was not tighten ed.

The angry parents accused a security company hired to search pupils at the gate before entering the premises of failing to do its job.

They parents said had security been tight at the gate, a life would not have been lost.

Education spokesperson Ndo Mangala yesterday urged schools in areas where crime was prevalent to prioritise security to prevent the scourge.

He said the hiring of security companies at such schools was a prerequisite , and was not the responsibility of the department. - Alex Matlala
