World Boxing Federation flyweight king Zolani "Last Born" Tete, the extremely talented young fighter from Mdantsane, has joined Nick Durandt's gym in Johannesburg.
Tete, 21, a dexterous left-handed fighter who is any promoter's dream, joined Durandt on Tuesday after leaving the Eyethu Gym of accomplished manager-cum-promoter Mzimase Mnguni.
But his managerial contract with Sihle Mnguni, Mzimase's younger brother only ends in October. If Tete fights between now and October, Sihle will get 25 percent of his purse.
Tete's promotional contract with Mzimase expired last month. He will now fight under the Branco Sports Production banner of promoters Branco Milenkovic and Jacob Matlala.
Tete said there was no bad blood between him and the Mnguni brothers.
"This is a pure business decision. I left because I want to grow, and I think Nick is the kind of a trainer-manager who will help me achieve my goals of becoming a true world champion," he said yesterday.
Durandt described Tete as the best young fighter at present, promising to "mould him to perfection".
Durandt's big scoop comes a few months after the defection of Zolani Marali, Peter Mashamaite, Isaac Chilembe and Simphiwe Vetyeka from his camp.
"I don't recruit fighters but they recruit me. Tete came on his own accord," Durandt said.
Meanwhile, SA junior welterweight champion Kaizer Mabuza and WBF featherweight holder Oscar Chauke have also signed with Milenkovic. They are both trained by Manny Fernandez.
