The Young Communist League has suspended today's planned mass action at Unisa campuses in protest against its vice-chancellor, Barney Pityana, pictured.

Instead, the league and the SA Students Congress will hold talks with the institution's management in Pretoria.

The league had threatened to shut down the institution until Pityana resigned, saying he "lacked vision" and discriminated against "poor" students seeking higher education.

Unisa confirmed it would be meeting the youth league to address the issues it had raised recently.

Unisa spokesperson Doreen Gough said today's intended meeting was "facilitated" by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande. - Sapa
