A would-be thug was beaten to death by community members after he was found stealing from a house in Mpumalanga.

Lesley Seloma, 30, of Matlelerekeng in the Moutse area, allegedly used a screwdriver to break into a house in Marapyane.

Local headman Willie Molai said yesterday that a passer-by noticed that there was an intruder in the house at about 8pm on Monday.

The house belongs to Kenny Molefe, who lives in Pretoria with his wife.

"The witness blew the whistle, prompting villagers to investigate," Molai said.

He said Molefe's brother Masale, who lives about two blocks from the house, was called to open the house and check who was inside.

"When the suspect realised that the villagers had cornered him he took out a screwdriver and stabbed Masale in the head.

"This angered the community, who beat the suspect to a pulp," he said.

Molai said Seloma had been terrorising Marapyane for a long time. At the time of his death he was out on bail in one of the many theft cases he was facing.

Mmametlhake police spokesperson Hastings Chaane confirmed the incident, saying no one had been arrested yet. He said a murder case was being investigated.
