Messiah at Regina

Lovers of classical music are in for a great experience. On Sunday at Regina Mundi Church in Soweto at 2.30pm, one of the most popular pieces of classical music, the Messiah, translated by classical music expert Michael Masote, pictured, will be performed.

In the early 1980s Masote, a recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga, began to translate sections of Handel's Messiah into nine South African indigenous languages. The Messiah is a two-hour oratorio celebrating life and resurrection.

The African Messiah was conceived to unify South Africans in song through culture and music.

The Arts and Culture Department in partnership with the African Cultural organisation of South Africa and the City of Johannesburg will host this acclaimed performance in commemoration of Africa Day 2009.
