Exhibitions, lectures and motivational speeches are some of the activities that will mark Africa Day celebrations today and on Saturday in Tshwane and Soweto.
This year, Muhammad Jalal Ahmad Hashim from Sudan is visiting South Africa and giving lectures during Africa Month. The Soweto activities on Saturday will be at the Hector Pietersen Museum in Maseko Street, Orlando West, at noon.
The Tshwane lecture today will be at 5.30pm and will be held in the Kwame Nkrumah Hall at Unisa - Vista Campus, 4th Floor, 263 Skinner Street.
Meanwhile, the organisers, Ebukhosini Solutions, Africa Institute of South Africa, Centre for Africa Renaissance Studies, in collaboration with other community organisations, urge South Africans and Africans living in South Africa to celebrate this 46th Africa Liberation Day with the Nubian people of Sudan and Africans all over the world.
The celebrations will include community lectures, exhibitions and displays of African literature, a screening of the award-winning movie by acclaimed filmmaker Owen Alik Shahadah, 500 Years Later, as well as performances by a Kliptown cultural youth group.
Having Hashim in the country is regarded by the organisers as notable. He is a distinguished professor in Nubian linguistics, an ethnology expert, one of the most significant authorities on Sudanese affairs and an acclaimed writer, researcher and cultural activist.
He will deliver a lecture on the influence of Islam on native Africans over centuries, titled "The Islamisation and Arabisation of Sudan - a Threat to Africa?" His lecture will focus on:
l How issues of religion, culture and politics affect people in Sudan, specifically, and in Africa in general;
l The plight of the Nubians who are a marginalised group in Sudan;
l The politics of language and culture.
The significance of the event is that it will be presented in a collaborative effort to highlight Africa Liberation Day and World Day for Cultural Diversity.
After Hashim's lecture other speakers for today will be Monica Juma (AISA) and Samba Buri Mboup (CARS), while tomorrow Andile Mngxitama will respond to Hashim's speech.
Mngxitama is distinguishing himself as a scholar of black consciousness. He recently published two journals, New Frank Talk and Why Steve Biko would not vote.
