Members of the community applauded yesterday when the Lephalale magistrate's court refused a police inspector bail and remanded him in custody for allegedly stealing two head cattle.
Lephalale stock theft unit member Inspector Simon Malebaloa was refused bail after new cases of stock theft against him were reported.
The court postponed his case to June 26, when he will face a number of charges involving stock theft, four counts of theft under false pretences and defeating the ends of justice.
The court established that Malebaloa had not only stolen two head of cattle, but had also forced stock farmers who had lost cattle to pay him after their cattle had been recovered. He had allegedly collected R11800 from four farmers.
Meanwhile, Inspector Eric Phokhu, 42, of the Marble Hall stock theft unit was granted R2000 bail on Tuesday for allegedly stealing seven head of cattle.
