University Sports South Africa is sending a huge delegation of 173 people to the 2009 World Student Games in Belgrade, Serbia, in July, the federation's president Sanele Madlala announced yesterday.

The South African men's soccer team, as was the case at the 2007 World Student Games in Thailand, has not qualified.

"Our men's soccer side did not qualify. The problem is that the organisers invite teams based on their previous performance in the tournament," said Madlala.

Malumbete Ralethe, Federation of International University Sports (Fisu) board member, said the system used to select teams for the tournament was being reviewed.

"That system will change very soon now that continental structures have been established. We are now going to have continental qualifications," Ralethe said.
