An SABC journalist has died after a long illness.

Mpumalanga-based Bhengu Johnson Malope, who died on Monday morning after undergoing an operation, was described as a hard worker by SABC regional editor Isaac Masemola.

"One of his stories I will always remember was when he highlighted the plight of children of Mzinti village in Nkomazi in 2006. They were studying under the trees," Masemola said.

"After that report a Johannesburg company offered to build a state-of-the-art school, courtesy of Malope's exposure."

Malope, known in the media as "Grootie", leaves behind five children, two brothers and a sister.

He started working for Radio Swazi in 1984 in sound technology in Pretoria.

Later in 1995 he joined Mopani - an SABC news team in the Mpumalanga region. At the time of his death Malope was acting news editor.
