New Lexus ready to hit SA market

The new generation Lexus RX will be launched in July, Lexus South Africa has confirmed.

The new range will include petrol and performance hybrid derivatives. The RX350 and RX450h will be completely new luxury SUVs and each derivative will be available in two levels of luxury specification.

The launch of the new generation Lexus RX comes almost a year after the introduction of a performance hybrid derivative of the current RX.

"The RX400h was very well accepted by customers, accounting for 37percent of RX sales despite our production allocation being heavily restricted," says Kevin Flynn, general manager of Lexus South Africa.

"We expect the market share of hybrid to increase substantially with the new generation RX as the market continues to adopt the technology and begins to understand the benefits of petrol electric hybrid better."

Lexus became the first manufacturer car maker in South Africa to introduce a range of hybrid vehicles last year when it launched GS450h and RX400h.

The RX450h will get second generation Lexus hybrid drive technology, combining a refined 3,5-litre petrol V6 engine with two electric motors to give a total system output of 220kW.

The maker said the new drivetrain offers improved efficiencies and class-leading emissions standards, while not losing its performance edge.

The Lexus performance hybrid will continue to offer the performance of rival petrol V8 models with the torque and fuel economy characteristics of competitor turbo diesels, the key benefit of full hybrid technology.
