University of KwaZulu-Natal rector Malegapuru Makgoba has been cleared of claims that he suppressed freedom of expression at the institution .

The university appointed a committee of seven people in 2007 to probe accusations that Makgoba managed the institution with an iron fist following negative publicity relating to academic freedom.

Addressing the media at UKZN's Westville campus on Monday, committee chairperson Phumla Mnganga said they found no evidence that academic freedom was infringed.

"Based on the submissions received, there is no evidence of a threat to the right to teach, learn and research at the university."

The issue of academic freedom sparked debate when the university charged professors Nithaya Chetty and John van den Berg in July last year with bringing the university into disrepute for communicating with the media.

The pair had accused Makgoba of withholding a science and agriculture faculty report from the senate. - Sapa
