Pressure is mounting on the University of South Africa's council to fire its vice-chancellor, Barney Pityana.

Yesterday the Young Communist League said it would launch nationwide protests at all Unisa campuses, starting tomorrow. It accused Pityana of denying poor students access to higher education.

The league's general secretary Buti Manamela said the strike would be joined by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union and the South African Students Congress.

"We have the backing of students, staff members - and we will be toyi-toying outside Unisa campuses."
