With the 2010 World Cup around the corner, Metrorail KwaZulu-Natal is doubling its railway police to ensure the safety of soccer fans and train commuters.

Metrorail KwaZulu-Natal regional manager Dumi Dube said railway police would be increased from 350 to 700.

Metrorail was also spending R140million to build a new train station, called Moses Mabhida station, next to the giant stadium.

Soccer fans will be able to step off a train and take a short walk to their seats in the new Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Contractors have been appointed, the main one being Grinaker-LTA.

Construction has started with the site establishment, geotechnical investigation and piling. The completion date is March 2010, said Dube.

Dube said this was part of Metrorail's drive to ensure a peaceful, incident free and safe tournament.

He also said that transport infrastructure refurbishment and renovations were on track for the big football extravaganza.

Dube said Metrorail received 13 refurbished 10M5 train sets in the 2008/09 financial year, bringing to 28 the number of 10M5 train sets in the region.

He said eight more sets will be delivered in the 2009/10 financial year.

He said they were on track and ready for 2010, with nearly R130million being spent to spruce up commuter rail facilities.

"A total of R31,4million has been budgeted to renovate ticket offices and public toilets, build paraplegic toilets, paint all buildings, fencing, resurface platforms, instal new station signage, park and ride facilities, and upgrade station lights and the public address systems," Dube said.
