Teachers not paid for four months

About 12 temporary teachers in Limpopo say they have gone for four months without pay.

The teachers are from the Mopani district. They claim that they have not been paid since the beginning of this year. They have been working for the district since 2007.

They also claim that they apprached the provincial department of education for clarity about their salaries but could not get any explanation.

They told Sowetan that they were being offered three-month contracts while teachers from Zimbabwe working at the same schools were being given 12-month contracts.

They claim contracts for Zimbabweans were automatically renewed while those of local teachers were first subjected to negotiations before being renewed.

"The department is treating us like dirt. How does it expect us to do our best while we go to work without pay?" asked another angry teacher.

The teachers allege that their colleagues who have since moved to Mpumalanga, have now received permanent positions.

"This means that those teachers have had to sacrifice living with their families in pursuit of permanent posts," said a teacher.

Attempts to get comment from the department were unsuccessful at the time of going to press as officials were yesterday said to be in a meeting.
