GENEVA - Auction house Sotheby's said it sold a rare 7,03 carat blue diamond for a record price of $9,5million (R800million) on Tuesday night to an anonymous bidder.

"This total represents the highest price for a fancy vivid blue diamond sold at auction and the record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction," said Sotheby's.

It said the winning bidder for the auction in Geneva had not yet exercised the privilege of naming the stone, which was found in the Cullinan mine in South Africa. -- Sapa-DPA
