Newly appointed Gauteng MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mtimkulu has urged South Africans to show their passion for soccer by buying tickets for the Confederations Cup.

Mbatha-Mtimkulu is expected to announce a promotional campaign in support of the Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup next week.

She said it was important for all the Gauteng residents and South Africans in general to embrace the two competitions.

Today marks exactly five years since Sepp Blatter, Fifa president, opened an envelope to unveil South Africa as the country to host the 2010 World Cup.

"We feel it is appropriate to begin speaking to our people about the importance of welcoming our visitors within our borders on this day when the host nation was announced," Mbatha-Mtimkulu.

"With the launch of our campaign in just over a week's time, we will be going out to the people of Gauteng with one message: It starts here, it starts with us and more importantly, it starts with you."
