Bay United claims rubbished

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality disputes the claim by Bay United that the club paid more than R1,5 million to use the EPRU Stadium for its home matches.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality disputes the claim by Bay United that the club paid more than R1,5 million to use the EPRU Stadium for its home matches.

In a statement the municipality's media management officer, Kupido Baron, said the negative statements by Bay United officials regarding the city's commitment to the club were disappointing, especially since the institution has an amicable relationship with United.

Baron said United never paid a single cent to use the stadium in La Roche Drive.

In fact when the Rugby Union threatened to stop the soccer club from using that facility the municipality had stepped in to resolve the situation.

The municipality made R1,5 million available to pay for the stadium and signed a contract to that effect.

After a special rate was negotiated and the money paid directly to EPRU, the balance totaling R135620,66 was transferred to the club's account.

"Further claims of a hostile environment and a lack of assistance to develop other soccer facilities in the city are treated with the disdain it deserves," said Baron.

Earlier this week United boss Sipho Pityana expressed the club's disappointment at the lack of support from the local municipality and provincial government. - Sapa
