New agriculture MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba would like to see Limpopo become the principal exporter of agricultural products in the world.

This despite mixed feelings among agricultural stakeholders over the lack of irrigation water and the ongoing collapse of farms now occupied by the beneficiaries of land restitution. Most of these farms are now lying fallow.

She announced this during her formal introduction to the department's headquarters in Polokwane yesterday.

Letsatsi-Duba said she was going to prioritise the export of agricultural products to boost the province's economy.

"I would like to see the province exporting agricultural products to places as far away as Russia," she said.

Letsatsi-Duba took over from Dikeledi Magadzi, who has been redeployed to the safety, security and liaison department. AgriSA deputy president Theo de Jager said they wanted Letsatsi-Duba to support the beneficiaries of land restitution to produce food.

De Jager said they were sad to have lost Magadzi to the other department "but we hope she [Magadzi] will be able to stop stock theft".

"President Jacob Zuma has said that some of the policies on land restitution need to be reviewed. We believe this will help us go forward," Letsatsi-Duba said.
