Police yesterday discovered the headless and decomposed body of a woman in a shallow grave.

Police suspect the body - found at Makgofe village outside Polokwane - is that of Frangelina Phuti Morudi, who disappeared two months ago.

Police discovered the body after a tip-off on Tuesday afternoon. This after an unnamed visitor became worried when she saw something that looked like a shallow grave near a house in the village.

She alerted the police, who went to investigate. On digging up the grave they discovered a beheaded and badly decomposed body.

But the head was nowhere to be found. A further search led to the discovery of another shallow grave in which a skull was found.

Police would not be drawn into confirming whether the skull belonged to the beheaded body they had initially discovered.

Spokesperson Sergeant Mothemane Malefo said they first wanted to conduct a postmortem.

"We are waiting for the postmortem to help us determine if there's a link between the skull and the body that were discovered in Makgofe village outside Polokwane," Malefo said.

He said the postmortem would also determine the cause of death.

He said police had opened an inquest docket and investigations were continuing.

Malefo said they had invited Morudi's family to help identify the body.

Morudi, 45, went missing while on her way from a night vigil in the village on March 7.

She was allegedly abducted by a man on that fateful day and never seen again.

"We have invited the Morudi family and if they suspect the body might be that of their family member we will as a consequence conduct further DNA tests to determine the relationship," Malefo explained.

"As of now we cannot really say the body is Morudi's because we do not want to raise people's expectations unnecessarily."
