Drive to control rabies kicks off

The Mopani district municipality has embarked on a campaign to vaccinate pets against the spread of rabies.

The campaign kick-started at Ramotshinyadi village in Bolobedu, Limpopo, on Monday and continues in other villages until next Wednesday.

District municipal spokesperson Tumelo Malaka said rabies is a viral disease that is primarily spread by dogs and is endemic throughout South Africa. It is usually transmitted into a bite wound through infected animals' saliva. He said goats, donkeys and cats could also become infected and spread rabies.

Vaccination was carried out at Ramotshinyadi , Mokgwathi and Mawa villages yesterday and goes to Mohokho Block 6 and 7 today . It will continue at Mawa Block 12 on Monday, Mohokho Block 5 on Tuesday and finishes at Ooghoek Block 13 village on Wednesday.
