Only five more provincial heats of the Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards remain before the winner is crowned in Johannesburg on June 20.

Nine top orators in grades 11 and 12 from South Africa's public schools, for whom English is not a mother tongue, will compete for the top prize.

This is Anglo American's corporate social investment and responsibility activity. It is part of the youth development activities of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

The awards aim to help improve public speaking skills from the research to the presentation phase, develop leadership qualities and encourage a pioneering spirit.

Two eliminations were held in Durban and in Mmabatho, North West, at the weekend.

In Mmabatho, the winners were Tsholofelo Sebolao, Koketso Sekoaila and Katlo Mmereki.

In Durban the winners were Mnelisi gasa, Velile Ximba and Makaziwe Simelane.

These young orators join Mpumalanga's Thandekile Mazeko and Gauteng's Ndumiso Hadebe who were chosen over the past two months.

Other provincial heats will take place in Free State and Northern Cape on May 16, in Limpopo on May 23, in Eastern Cape on May 30 and Western Cape on June 6.
