There were no laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu or H1N1 in South Africa by yesterday, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said.

NICD deputy director Dr Lucille Blumberg said monitoring for suspected cases and laboratory testing through the National Health Laboratory Services would continue.

"To date we have only found a number of seasonal influenza cases that have been detected through the monitoring system," Blumberg said.

Earlier this month a man who presented himself to the Cape Town Medi-Clinic with flu-like symptoms as he had recently travelled to Argentina tested negative for the swine flu virus.

The total number of swine flu infections world-wide confirmed by laboratory tests was 4694. - Sapa
