The SA Democratic Teachers' Union says the new Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande faces the daunting task of making higher education more accessible to those outside the education system.

"There are some three million unemployed people in the age group of 18 to 24 years. Offering training to these youngsters is a priority. This means mobilising the resources of the SETAs and addressing the chaos in further education."

Stanley Letsoko, a director at Wits Business School, says the "most important task" for Nzimande is to train the huge number of university dropouts and to raise finance for tertiary students.
