The ANC said it has plans for its veteran and former minister of Arts and Culture Pallo Jordan.
Although popular within the ANC, Jordan was excluded from President Jacob Zuma's cabinet.
But ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe told Sowetan the ANC has plans for Jordan. "We'll be making an announcement about his role in the ANC soon."
Delegates to the ANC's Polokwane conference had elected Jordan at number four on the party's 85 member national executive committee.
In the run-up to the 2009 general elections, party structures elected Jordan at number 17 on the party's list of parliamentary candidates.
With most of its executive committee in government, the ANC is hard pressed to ensure the organisational structure does not collapse.
It plans to call on its veterans to beef up its full-time staff at its head office in Luthuli House. Previously, ANC branches have been weakened, leading to infighting within the party.
Last week the ANC announced it was redeploying former Social Development minister Zola Skweyiya after he resigned from parliamentary politics.
Independent analyst Dale McKinley said he thought Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, whom he said had not performed well, had been retained for "gender equity" purposes. He said it was unlikely Charles Nqakula would be retained.
