A total of 30 clubs have registered to participate in the Orlando Pirates Soweto Cup at Safa Soweto in Klipspruit on May 17.

Nkosana Khoza, Pirates marketing executive, said this yearly six-a-side event would be played in traditional one-pal format.

Developed on the dusty streets of Soweto over 50 years ago, one-pal is still being played in the township and other ares across the country.

Pirates are expecting 64 clubs to register for this tournament before May 15. Each club is allowed to register 10 players.

More than R50000 in cash will be up for grabs, with the winners pocketing R30000. Runners-up will receive R10000 and the third-placed club will take home R5 000. Clubs eliminated in the quarterfinals will each get R1000.

Past and current Pirates stars like Mandla Sithole, Bashin Mahlangu, Teko Modise, Katlego Mashego and Dikgang Mabalane will also be there.

Interested clubs can phone Mahlaku Nkuna at (011) 484 2084 or e-mail sowetocup@orlandopiratesfc.co.za.
