Montgomery, who earned 102 Springbok caps in an international career spanning 13 seasons, agreed to the appointment after discussions last week with Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and SA Rugby acting managing director, Andy Marinos.
He will take up the position at the end of May when the squad assembles to begin preparations for the Test series against the British and Irish Lions.
"I am delighted that Percy has agreed to join us," said de Villiers.
"Aside from his obvious rugby ability, Percy is one of the greatest kickers to ever grace the game and it would be silly for us not to make use of the wealth of experience he has to offer.
" It is also important that we make use of specialists such as Percy to refine and improve specific aspects of our game."
Montgomery's primary role will be to work with the kickers in the squad on all aspects of kicking. He will also have a broader role in imparting the technical and tactical knowledge he has garnered in his 102 Test matches.
Ironically, Montgomery made his Test debut at centre in the second Test against the British and Irish Lions in Durban in 1997. After four seasons in Test rugby, he left South Africa for Wales in 2001 where he spent three years playing for Newport.
In 2004, when Jake White was appointed Springbok coach, Montgomery agreed to return to South Africa and later became one of the stalwarts of the Springbok World Cup winning squad.
Marinos confirmed that Montgomery had been appointed for the 2009 international season that includes the Lions series, Tri-Nations and the end-of-year tour.
Montgomery holds 94 Springbok records, including the most Test points (893), most Tests at fullback (87), most points in a game (35), most conversions and penalties (153 and 148 respectively) and most points at Rugby World Cup 2007 in France (105).
