Joel in world of his own

It is either Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana is one hell of a confused man in the world or just taking South Africans for a ride.

It is either Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana is one hell of a confused man in the world or just taking South Africans for a ride.

When naming a provisional team for the Confederations Cup last Thursday, he went to town about his futile exercise in searching for quality strikers.

This was after he was asked if it was not time to get a seasoned striker to compliment Bernard Parker. But Santana took all the people present into his dreamland.

Before that Santana refused to talk to the press about the players not included in the team he had just announced.

It was specifically in relation to his continued snubbing of one Richard "Kimberley Express" Henyekane of Lamontville Golden Arrows.

If scoring goals regularly is still the criteria used in terms of selecting strikers for Bafana Bafana, then Henyekane has been consistently doing so in the Absa Premiership.

Henyekane has crowned his exciting season by finishing with 19 goals and will get R50 000 for winning the Lesley Manyathela Top Goal Scorer award.

Maybe it is because Henyekane plays for a wrong team. There is no shred of doubt that he could be in Bafana Bafana if he was based in Gauteng.

What boggles the mind is that bench-warmers such as Lance Davids, Mathew Booth and Rowen Fernandez are continuously selected by the clueless Santana.

Regarding Davids' inclusion, Santana told us he would not select him if he had another 10 days because he was not regularly fielded by his club.

To use Mangosuthu Buthelezi's favourite word, that's balderdash.

Maybe I need to start by reminding Santana about Bafana Bafana's history in the same Confederations Cup that South Africa will be hosting in June.

Just in case you are not aware, the first (and last time) Bafana Bafana participated in the Confederations Cup was in 1997 in Saudi Arabia.

When the team went to Riyadh, Bafana Bafana had a good coach in Clive Barker who in 1996 did a great job by winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

Barker was fired at the OR Tambo International Airport when Bafana Bafana returned from their dismal drama-filled trip to Saudi Arabia.

Call me unpatriotic or other names, I truly cannot guarantee Santana the job, come June 28 when the Confederations Cup final will be played.
