A large portion of the R1 million won by the Griquas in the Vodacom Cup final against the Blue Bulls at Loftus at the weekend should go to their flyhalf Riaan Viljoen.

Viljoen scored all their points, dominated the match tactically and kept the Bulls pinned in their own territory.

The visitors deservedly won their fourth title with a 28-19 scoreline.

All the points, including a try each, were scored by the two flyhalves, Viljoen and Blue Bulls pivot Francois Brummer.

It was a real final - hard, largely uninspiring but nevertheless an interesting match with little movement and many errors.

The story is told by the seven penalties and a drop goal that made the half time score 15-9 to the visitors, with a Wayne Julies high tackle and yellow card costing the Blue Bulls nine points in just six minutes as Griquas took over the game just before half time.

In all there were 10 successful penalties and a drop goal and two tries that came in the last quarter of the match.

It certainly wasn't a million rand performance from the two sides, and it remained a matter of give and take throughout, though the Griquas tight five were marginally on top.

This slight dominance carried on into the second half, with the visitors getting better ball and looking to take over proceedings, which they did as the game wore on.

With more and better ball won, their kicking game was a little more accurate and they played the territorial game to a tee, with halfbacks Dougie Helmuth and Viljoen running the game tactically.

Probably the finest and most dangerous move of the match until then came after 59 minutes, and then Blue Bulls wing Rocco Jansen couldn't take the ball cleanly.

With about 12 minutes remaining, Griquas flank Sean Plaatjies played the ball to Viljoen from a ruck and he shrugged off Francois Brummer and spun out of a Julies tackle for the Griquas's only try. - Sapa
