Eight members of a family allegedly burnt to death by an abusive father were buried in Giyani on Saturday.

Police are now looking for Mozambican national Thomas Nukeri, 46.

The mayor of Greater Giyani Doris Mathebula told hundreds of mourners that they should all help to fight crime in their areas.

"I would like to call on all members of the community, as well as the relatives and friends of Thomas Nukeri to assist police arrest him.

"Many crimes have been reported in our area since I took office in February.

"In Phangani village, an eight-year-old girl was raped and killed while in Mavalani village a 22-year-old woman was brutally killed by her boyfriend," Mathebula said.

Mozambican government representative Admiro Maluleke said he was shocked by the gruesome murder alleged to have been perpetrated by Nukeri on his countrymen.

Maluleke also thanked South Africa for giving refuge to Mozambicans who had fled the country's civil war. He said those who had settled around Giyani had received a warm welcome.
