Four men who allegedly stabbed their 21-year-old friend to death have been arrested, Northern KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Zuzokwakhe Maphisa was stabbed 19 times, allegedly by four friends, in KwaMsane outside Mtubatuba in Zululand.

Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the incident happened on Wednesday night.

Mdletshe said the suspects were arrested soon afterwards.

"Police are still taking statements from the suspects and other people who might have witnessed the killing.

"We are also investigating reports that the five men were very close friends who often hung out together," he said.

"Apparently on the day of the incident the friends were walking in a group. Maphisa is believed to have left the group to go and see his girlfriend."

Mdletshe said police suspect that it was Maphisa's "breaking away" that made his alleged attackers angry.

"They followed him to the girlfriend's house. The friends are alleged to have stabbed him several times in front of his girlfriend. One of the suspects is allegedly Maphisa's girlfriend's brother. All the suspects are now in custody.

"The men will be charged as soon as investigations are completed. They are expected to appear at KwaMsane magistrate's court," said Mdletshe.

Meanwhile, ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks has urged members of the public to use pedestrian walkways to prevent being hit by motorists.

This follows an incident in which a pedestrian died yesterday morning after being struck by a car in Westville.

Banks said paramedics responded to a call that a pedestrian had been knocked down by a motor vehicle on the M13.

"When they arrived at the scene, they found the pedestrian lying face down on the road and in a critical condition.

"He had suffered a fractured leg and arm and was not breathing," he said.

Banks said advanced life support intervention had to be performed on the patient.

"He was intubated and medication was administered.

"Despite all the life saving measures that were performed, the patient unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene," Banks added.

This was the second pedestrian to be struck down at this particular location in the past five days.

"The area apparently has a pedestrian bridge situated only 50 metres away," he said.
