Fifa 2010 committee chairperson Danny Jordaan and acclaimed novelist Zakes Mda were among the five "Top Achievers" in various categories announced last night at the Johnnie Walker Celebrating Strides Awards held in Johannesburg.

Jordaan was honoured in the leadership category for the "blood, sweat and tears" that went into the successful bid by South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup.

Mda was named the Top Achiever in the Arts category following his lifetime devotion to culture and the arts.

Jenkin, a designer, who started life as a bolt-maker and who now produces innovative furniture of international distinction, said he would use his winnings to establish a fund to educate a young South African in Industrial Design and facilitate an apprenticeship abroad.

Ndaba Ntsele won the award in the Entrepreneurship category following the launch of private equity fund Pamodzi Resources Fund under his leadership in 2007.

He said he intended to match the prize money with an amount of R100000 for the creation of a fund for maths and science teachers.

Winner in the Environmental category, Lindela Mjenxane, was rewarded for his outstanding efforts in teaching Cape Town townships' pupils about the importance of water, conservation and looking after townships' environments through his Beyond Expectations environmental project.

Each category winner received a R140000 prize package comprising R100000 in cash and a limited edition bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Cask Strength Anniversary blend, valued at R40000.
