Academic heads up education

Moyahabo Mabeba

In what appears to be a calculated move in setting up a competent provincial cabinet, Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale has appointed an academic as a member of the executive committee to run the department of education.

Besides his remarkable leadership qualities in ANC structures, Namane Dickson Masemola packs a punch when it comes to educational matters.

Masemola, a former Greater Sekhukhune district mayor, was introduced to the department's headquarters in Polokwane yesterday.

He praised his predecessors for their "dedication in an attempt to transform education in the province, though under strenuous infrastructural difficulties".

Masemola, who holds an honours degree in leadership management for transformation, takes over from Aaron Motsoaledi who is now deployed at national level.

Masemola assumed government responsibilities in 1999 when he became a member of the legislature until 2001.

The incumbent, who comes from GaSekhukhune, faces a daunting task of steering education in the right direction.

Masemola conceded that the poor matric results recorded in GaSekhukhune were some of the causes of Limpopo being ranked among the worst performing provinces.

In an interview with the Sowetan in Polokwane yesterday, he identified education as one of the top five priorities that the government wished to pursue tirelessly in "improving the lives of ordinary South Africans".
