The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday announced that its provincial secretary, Senzo Mchunu, was stepping down.

The announcement confirms widespread speculation that Mchunu is likely to be appointed the new MEC for education in Zweli Mkhize's provincial cabinet.

Acting secretary, Sihle Zikalala, who is tipped to take over from Mchunu, said Mchunu's stepping down was in keeping with the Polokwane conference resolution that the position of provincial secretary should be occupied on a full-time basis.

"The PEC believes that the leadership and experience of Mchunu can be better utilised on a full-time basis with the provincial legislature.

"The PEC has at the same time seen the need to retain the skills and experience of Mchunu and thus took a decision to co-opt him into the PEC," said Zikalala.

Zikalala praised Mchunu for working excellently and with zeal and courage.

"He has served the ANC with distinction over the years in his position as secretary.

"Under his leadership, the ANC has grown in leaps and bounds from being an opposition party in government.

"Proof of his sound leadership was his ability to guide the party to a decisive election victory where it gained over 62percent victory in the recent elections," he said.

Mchunu was not available for comment.
