Litterbugs will be issued with a red card by Pikitup, who yesterday launched a campaign to keep Johannesburg clean ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Pikitup managing director Zami Nkosi said the "Pitch In and we'll Pick It UP!" campaign was aimed at incorporating the excitement of the soccer event and keeping the city clean.

"The aim is to draw an analogy between a clean city and a clean game," he said.

Nkosi said residents should not litter and those who do should be embarrassed by being given a red card.

He said that June 6 would be "Clean up day" and the public would be invited to assist Pikitup in cleaning some of the most notorious dirt spots.

Nkosi said they were going to start an environmental pilot project of providing 56000 houses with three bins - for recyclable, non-recyclable, and green waste.

He said the R20million campaign included educating all the residents about littering, recycling and the use of bins provided by Pikitup.
