ANC councillor Vusi Khoza and seven others appeared briefly in the Durban magistrate's court on Tuesday on seven charges ranging from murder to attempted murder.

They were arrested early this year following an incident which received world-wide condemnation as they allegedly forced foreign nationals to jump from a high-rise building in the city centre. Zimbabwean Victor Zowa, 24, and Tanzanian Omar Said, 25, fell to their deaths while a 23-year-old Mozambican survived.

The foreigners allegedly jumped from the building while trying to escape from an angry crowd wielding bush knives and other weapons.

Khoza's co-accused are Sean Thabo Jacobs, Nkosinathi Dlamini, Delisile Reginah Ngwane, Linda Nala, Zoleka Sigcau, Patricia Ballantyne and Mzokuthoba Mngonyama. All are out on R2000 bail each except Jacobs who was unable to raise the money. He will remain in custody. The others had their bail extended.

They face two counts of murder, public violence, conspiracy to commit murder, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.
